This is a Hawthorn RB-12 style walnut top tension model banjo built in late 2016 as one of our first top tension banjos. It has been a shop and show sample. The price is discounted accordingly. We built this banjo before we had developed our own Eco brass metal parts and it features an AMB cast top tension hoop and a purpose built reinforced brass flange built by Master Machinist John Stanley in Australia. It’s about a pound lighter than our 2019 models at 12.75 pounds. This banjo also features a Kulesh New Big 10 spun cast flathead tone ring and a Randall Wyatt birch block rim, a well proven combination. Of all the banjos we have built, this is our favorite tone ring and rim combination. Other features are a straight grain Virginia Black Walnut neck, a solid carved walnut top tension resonator with the flat inside and Waverly tuners with vintage style pumpkin buttons. We mounted a John Balch Stern Tanning calfskin head, true to the 1937-41 period in which the classic Gibson RB-12 was built. 12 inch radius Rosewood fretboard, a Huber bridge, chrome plated parts, and a clamshell tailpiece per the original Gibson style complete the picture. With a Hawthorn hardshell case.
